Enrolled Agent or CPA: Questions to Ask When Choosing Tax Help

Choose tax help by matching the work to the provider's current credential, relevant experience and written engagement. For bookkeeping or management reports, identify the tasks and deliverables rather than assuming they follow automatically from a credential.

1) List the tax help needed

Separate return preparation, planning, IRS notices, bookkeeping and other reports. Ask which provider will perform and review each task and which services require a separate engagement.

2) Compare providers on the same scope

Request written fees, exclusions, document requirements and target dates for the same work. Ask about experience with the tax years, transactions and records involved.

3) Working with more than one adviser

Confirm who will perform each requested task and what is included in the written engagement. Any work with another adviser must be agreed separately.

Additional tax and recordkeeping considerations

An enrolled agent’s IRS practice rights are not limited to simple returns. Choose based on experience with the relevant tax issues, representation needs and agreed services, as well as an active credential.

Compare written fees, relevant experience and included services. Price depends on the provider and engagement; an EA credential alone does not establish a lower cost than a CPA or attorney.

An appropriately credentialed representative can assist with an IRS examination when authorized for the relevant tax matters and periods, generally through Form 2848. Ask who will handle the case and what services the engagement includes.

No credential guarantees a higher or lower fee. Ask each provider for the same scope of work, exclusions, and fee estimate before comparing prices.
