What an Enrolled Agent Does: Tax Work and IRS Representation

Tax work may include preparation, planning or IRS representation. An Enrolled Agent, or EA, is a tax practitioner licensed by the IRS. Ask about the practitioner's current credential, experience with your tax matter and the services included in the engagement.

1) Match the tax work to your question

Tax preparation, planning and IRS notice support are different tasks. Identify the taxpayer, return year, outstanding notices and deadlines before agreeing on the work. Provide the relevant returns and supporting records.

2) Define the engagement

Confirm who will prepare or review the work, fees, required documents and communication arrangements. Ask separately about state-agency matters or work with another adviser.

3) Plan using the correct year

A purchase, entity label or general tax tip does not establish a deduction or credit. Ask which rule applies to the actual transaction and what records support the proposed treatment.

Additional tax and recordkeeping considerations

An enrolled agent has broad representation rights before the IRS for notices, audits, collection matters and appeals. Representation requires the appropriate authorization for the taxpayer, tax matters and periods. IRS representation rights do not authorize court litigation.

Credit capture
Education, business and energy incentives must be checked separately for the applicable tax year. The residential energy credits covered by Form 5695 generally ended for new qualifying property or expenditures after December 31, 2025, under their respective rules; do not assume they are available for a new 2026 purchase.

Confirm credentials and tax work scope

Pedro Henriquez is an Enrolled Agent in the United States and a CPA in the Dominican Republic. His Dominican CPA credential is not a U.S. state CPA license. Confirm the requested work and responsible practitioner in the engagement.

For more information, review the IRS guide to preparer credentials and qualifications. Confirm the practitioner assigned to your tax work and the authorizations needed for any separately agreed representation.
